East Clarendon Band

District, Region, and All-State Honor Band Requirements 2009-2010

Any student in grades 7-12 may choose to register to audition for District and Region/All-State Honor Bands. Students in grades 7 and 8 audition for Junior Honor Bands. Students in grades 9 and 10 audition for Clinic Honor Bands. Students in grades 11 and 12 audition for Senior Honor Bands.
The cost is $16 to audition for District and Region/All-State bands (you must do both - you can't do only one). The band will pay $8 for each student, each student must pay the other $8.
Students must pay Mr. Jones before Friday, October 23 to be eligible, and then pass-off specified playing assignments by certain dates to remain eligible to audition on December 7 (District), January 9 (Region), and January 23 (All-State if selected). If a student does not complete the auditions because they fail to pass-off the specified playing assignments, then they must repay the band the $8 it paid for you.
Details and deadlines about passing off audition materials will be provided to you weekly during the time between now and the audition dates.

Audition Requirements:

1) Major scales or rudiments. You must play the major scales (snare drums will play drum rudiments) required for your instrument from memory within a two minute time limit. Major scales (or rudiments) are either right or wrong. There is no partial credit when you are scored on these. Snare drummers will be required to play each rudiment correctly 6 times in a row at an even speed. See Mr. Jones to get a copy of the major scales (or rudiments) for your instrument.

2) Chromatic scale or Long Roll. You must play the chromatic scale (snare drums will play the Long Roll) listed below for your instrument from memory. There is no time limit on the chromatic scale (or long roll), but when you are scored you are judged on speed, even rhythm and accuracy of notes. See Mr. Jones to get a copy of the chromatic scale (or long roll) for your instrument.

3) Required Etude (solo). You must play a prepared etude. The etude does not have to be memorized. See Mr. Jones to get a copy of the etude for your instrument.

4) Musical Terms. You must give the definitions of five musical terms. The terms will be shown in writing to students on a card, not read aloud. Definitions of musical terms are either right or wrong. There is no partial credit when you are scored on these. See Mr. Jones to get a copy of the musical terms for your level.

5) Sightreading. You will be required to sightread two short musical examples. You will be given 30 seconds to study the first example and then 60 seconds to perform it. You will then be given another 30 seconds to study the second example followed by another 60 seconds to perform it. See Mr. Jones to get a handout describing the types of things you will have perform in the sightreading examples.
